Building a Career in Graphic Design: Kim’s Creative Journey

What happens when you follow your curiosity and love for design? For Kim Mabon, it led to a fulfilling career in graphic arts, a successful business of her own, and recognition from peers across the country. Her journey shows how a creative spark, combined with dedication and relationship-building, can lead to long-term success in the world of skilled trades.

Turning Passion into a Career

After high school, Kim knew she was interested in two things: computers and design. Instead of heading straight to a four-year university, she chose to attend community college, where she explored the world of graphic arts. That decision set the foundation for a career that has lasted nearly three decades.

From the beginning, Kim leaned into her love for visual storytelling. She took on projects that allowed her to stretch creatively while also learning how to solve real-world design challenges. Today, she proudly owns and operates her own business, Creative By Design, which she has been running for 29 years.

Earning Respect and Making an Impact

Kim has been recognized for her exceptional talent and leadership in the industry, winning more than 100 design awards—101, to be exact. But her impact goes beyond accolades. As a Creative Director, she helps brands communicate their message and identity with clarity and style.

Her path to success didn’t come from shortcuts. It came from a strong work ethic, building connections, and giving back. While still in school, Kim donated her design skills to local charities and small businesses, allowing her to build a portfolio while supporting causes she believed in.

Kim’s Advice for Aspiring Designers

If you’re thinking about pursuing a career in graphic design, Kim has two key pieces of advice:

  • Get your basic education to build a strong foundation
  • Start building relationships early—volunteer your design skills and gain experience while you learn

Kim is now 53 and still going strong, with creativity, energy, and the same love for design she started with. Her story is proof that with the right start, a trade like graphic design can lead to a lifetime of meaningful work.
