04 Jul From Landscaping to Floral Design: How Matthew Found His Perfect Fit in the Trades
When life takes an unexpected turn, it can sometimes lead to something even better.
Before the pandemic, Matthew managed a landscaping and construction company. But like many others, he found himself out of work when COVID hit. In the search for stability and purpose, he took a chance on something new—and found a career he truly loves.
A Fresh Start in Floral Design
While scrolling job boards, Matthew came across an opening at a local florist in La Jolla, California called Adelaide’s. With experience in landscaping and a good understanding of plants, he applied. That decision opened the door to a new path in floral design.
Though working with cut flowers was different from tending landscapes, his plant knowledge gave him a solid foundation. Over time, he learned the art of arrangement and the care that goes into every bouquet. Today, he is proud to be a professional florist and manager at Adelaide’s.
Learning and Growing in the Trade
Matthew encourages others who are curious about floral design to take the first step. “Go online, watch YouTube videos, or reach out to your local florists,” he says. Many shops offer hands-on design classes where you can learn how flowers go from farm to table.
The key is to stay open to learning. Community workshops and online tutorials make floral design an accessible trade for those with a creative spirit and a love for plants.
A Career Built on Joy and Beauty
At 34, Matthew is proud of the journey that brought him here. He found a role that brings joy to others while letting him use his talents every day.
“I absolutely love my job and I will be here for the rest of my life,” he says.
