From the Job Site to the Sales Office: Johnny’s Journey into Trade Sales

Not every path in the trades leads to swinging a hammer or wiring a house. For Johnny, a career in trade sales opened doors he never expected, without a college degree and without a background in advertising or print.

He started out working in construction. One day on the job site, a coworker told him, “You belong in sales.” That small comment planted a seed. Through a mutual friend, Johnny found an opportunity in trade sales with a print advertising company. He had zero experience in the field, and the company wasn’t sure whether to take a chance on him. But they did, and he stayed with them for six years.

Now 58, Johnny is in trade sales for a construction company and could not be happier. “It is not for everyone,” he admits, but for those who enjoy a challenge and love building relationships, it can be a fulfilling and financially rewarding path. For Johnny, it is all about the people and the problem-solving that comes with the job. “Work can be fun,” he says. “Work for the sales, enjoy the people. Life is supposed to be a bit challenging.”

He attributes his success to the work ethic he was raised with. Johnny shows up on time, gives his best effort every day, and only calls in sick when he is truly sick. His motto is simple: “Do it to the best of your ability. Be the best you can be. Give eight for eight.”

Johnny’s story is a reminder that sales is a skilled trade of its own. It often begins on the job site, not in a classroom. It is also a path that can lead to long-term career growth, strong income potential, and even business ownership for those who want it.
