From Part Time Job to Business Owner: Suzanne’s Path to Becoming an Optician

Sometimes the path to a lifelong career begins with something as simple as needing a part time job. That was the case for Suzanne, who now owns Optical Artisans, an optical store in La Jolla, California. What started as a side job while studying music production turned into a thriving career and business in the field of opticianry.

Suzanne was in college pursuing music production when she applied for a part time role at a local optical shop. She wore glasses herself and was curious about the field. Her willingness to learn, paired with two years of on the job training, helped her grow into the role. She then earned her American Board of Opticianry Certified license through the Regional Occupational Program.

When the owner of the shop was ready to step away, Suzanne was ready to step up. She acquired the store and became an entrepreneur, continuing to serve her community while doing work she genuinely loves.

Today, with 28 years of experience under her belt, Suzanne enjoys helping customers look and see their best. Her advice for anyone interested in this field is to start working in a chain or independent optical store to see if it feels like the right fit. Then, if it sparks your interest, pursue the license and build from there.
