From Ranch Hand to Farrier: Jaden’s Path Into the Art of Horseshoeing

Most careers start with a plan. Jaden started with a lost horseshoe.

At 20 years old, Jaden is an apprentice farrier, learning one of the oldest and most specialized trades in the country. His entry into the field was about as unplanned as it gets. He was watching a ranch in Arizona for family friends when a horse threw a shoe. Watching someone tack it back on, he was immediately curious. That single moment of curiosity changed the direction of his life.

He enrolled at Pacific Coast Horseshoeing School in Bishop, California, a two-month program that covers three distinct disciplines: classroom instruction, hands-on shoeing, and forging. Forging is the metalwork required to shape and fit a shoe properly. Students are tested on all three before earning their diploma. Jaden came out with both a diploma and a certification.

He is still in his apprenticeship, working alongside an experienced farrier and soaking up as much knowledge as he can before going out on his own. That patience and willingness to learn before leading is exactly the right instinct for a trade that demands precision. A good farrier is not just putting shoes on horses. Proper trimming and fitting directly affect the health and soundness of the animal. The stakes are real.

For anyone considering this path, Jaden’s advice is simple and hard-earned. “Don’t be discouraged,” he says. “I had no clue about anything when I got into it. Just one step at a time. It’s going to be hard, especially if you’re new to everything. But just keep on pushing.”

Two months of school, zero student debt, and a trade with lifelong demand. At 20, Jaden is already further along than most people twice his age.
