18 Jul A Career That Keeps Him Moving: Godfrey’s Journey as a Satellite Technician
Sometimes the best career opportunities are the ones you never planned for.
After earning his Associate degree in Computer Electronics, Godfrey began searching for a job in his field. While he waited for the right opportunity, he came across an opening to become a DirecTV satellite technician. He decided to take the position temporarily while continuing his job search.
That temporary job turned into a career.
Twenty years later, Godfrey is still doing what he enjoys, helping customers stay connected while working independently throughout San Diego County.
No Two Days Are the Same
One of the things Godfrey enjoys most is that no two days are the same. His work takes him from neighborhoods along the beach to homes in the mountains and even into the desert. Every day brings a new location, new customers, and new challenges to solve.
He also appreciates the independence that comes with the job. Once he receives his route for the day, he is trusted to manage his schedule, complete his installations and service calls, and provide excellent customer service.
A Career for Active, Hands-On People
Godfrey says this career is perfect for someone who enjoys working with their hands and staying active. The work is physical. It involves climbing ladders, working in different weather conditions, and occasionally reaching tight spaces to install or repair equipment. For him, those challenges are part of what makes the job enjoyable.
Advice for Future Satellite Technicians
His advice for anyone considering this career is to be prepared for an active lifestyle. Staying in shape, enjoying hands on work, and being comfortable with driving are all important parts of the job. If you like solving problems, meeting new people, and working independently, this trade could be a great fit.
At 43 years old, Godfrey is still happy with the decision he made two decades ago. What began as a temporary opportunity became a rewarding career that has allowed him to build valuable skills while doing work he genuinely enjoys.
