07 May How One Guy Worked His Way Into Management Without College
Some careers are carefully planned. Others are built one “yes” at a time.
Ralph, now a Structural Design Manager in the packaging industry, never set out to climb the ranks. But every time opportunity knocked, he answered. His journey from the production floor to the design office is a story of hard work, curiosity, and a positive attitude that turned a job into a fulfilling, creative career.
From Pressroom Helper to Design Leader
Ralph started his career at a folding carton manufacturer as general help. His first job was as a repiler on the printing press, stacking sheets by hand before automation took over the role. From there, he said “yes” to trying other departments. He moved into die cutting, then premakeready, and eventually learned how to program die boards.
Each time he was asked to assist in a new area, Ralph took the opportunity. When a supervisor in structural design left, he stepped in to help. And when the head designer left the company, Ralph didn’t hesitate to speak up.
“What about me?” he asked. “I’ve been helping in that area already.” That confidence led to his promotion to Structural Design Manager.
Learning on the Job and Owning It
Ralph didn’t go to college for structural design. Everything he knows came from on-the-job training and experience on the production floor. That hands-on background gave him an edge—he understands how packaging designs perform in real production environments.
“You can create some pretty complex structures,” he says, “but they still need to work downstream.” Thanks to his experience, Ralph knows how to design packaging that not only looks great but can also be assembled, glued, and shipped efficiently.
He also credits his success to asking questions and building strong relationships with team members who were willing to share their knowledge.
Advice for Aspiring Designers and Tradespeople
Ralph’s advice is practical and encouraging: “Don’t be afraid. Go into structural design with an open mind. Go into any area with an open mind. If a project doesn’t work the first time, keep at it.”
Now 53, Ralph thrives in a role that blends creativity, leadership, and technical skill. He works closely with customers to develop packaging solutions that meet their goals—and often exceed their expectations.
A Career Built by Curiosity and Commitment
Ralph’s story proves that you don’t need a formal degree to build a meaningful, high-level career. A willingness to learn, a strong work ethic, and a “can do” mindset can take you far.
