At 26 years old, Jacob has found something many young adults are looking for: work he enjoys, better earning potential than his previous jobs offered, and a career path that did not require him to take on education debt.
His path to becoming a Machine Operator did not begin with years of specialized training.
It began with deciding he wanted something different.
Looking Beyond Retail and Restaurants
Before entering manufacturing, Jacob worked in retail and the restaurant industry.
The jobs gave him work experience, but he knew they were not what he wanted for his long-term career. He was also looking for an opportunity to earn more.
That led him to consider an industry he had not worked in before.
Manufacturing.
Jacob applied for a position, was hired, and started at a higher wage than he had been earning in his previous jobs.
It was the beginning of an entirely new career.
Becoming a Machine Operator
Today, Jacob works as a Machine Operator in a large food manufacturing plant with approximately 400 to 500 employees.
His work involves equipment used in the mixing and packaging process that helps move food products through production.
Working in a large manufacturing facility has introduced Jacob to a different type of work environment. Manufacturing depends on people with many different skills working together to keep equipment operating and products moving safely and efficiently through the plant.
Jacob has found his place in that process, and he says he loves what he does.
“Don’t Be Afraid to Ask”
Starting in an unfamiliar industry means there will be things you do not know.
Jacob believes that is completely normal.
His advice to someone beginning a career in manufacturing is simple:
“Don’t be afraid to ask if you don’t know something. People want you to succeed.”
That willingness to ask questions can be an important part of learning any skilled profession. Instead of pretending to know something, Jacob encourages new employees to learn from the experienced people around them.
Building a Career Without Education Debt
Another part of Jacob’s story that stands out is that he has no education debt.
At 26, he has entered an industry where he is developing practical skills, earning more than he did in his previous jobs, and doing work he genuinely enjoys.
His experience is a reminder that there is more than one way to build a successful career.
For some people, the right path is college. For others, an opportunity may be waiting in manufacturing, construction, transportation, or another skilled industry where they can learn while working.
Jacob was willing to try something different.
That decision introduced him to a career he had not previously considered and, more importantly, one he loves.
