02 Sep Behind the Camera: Logan Powaski’s Career as a Cinematographer
For Logan Powaski, a career behind the camera started long before it became his profession.
As a kid, he would borrow his mom’s camcorder and make videos with his friends. By high school, he was creating videos for his school district, photographing sports teams for local news, and experimenting with concert photography.
Today, at 28, Logan is a Cinematographer, Video Editor, and Photographer who owns his own company and has worked on projects for major brands. His career has also taken him around the world, most recently to Norway.
What started as something he simply enjoyed doing eventually became a career he loves.
Turning an Interest Into a Career
Logan continued developing his skills after high school at Full Sail University in Orlando, Florida. He completed a Bachelor of Science in Film Production in 20 months.
In 2018, he moved to Los Angeles and began working on music videos and commercials.
Four years later, Logan took another step and started his own company. His work now focuses on social content, including projects for brands such as Variety, Adobe, and e.l.f. Cosmetics.
As a cinematographer, also called a Director of Photography or DoP, Logan works with the visual side of motion picture production. His career also includes video editing and still photography.
After eight years of working full time in the industry, he says he would not change his career.
“Every Day Is Different”
One of Logan’s favorite things about his work is the variety.
“I LOVE what I’m doing. Every day is different from the last.”
His projects have taken him to different places around the world, and owning his company gives him the opportunity to be his own boss and work alongside people he enjoys.
But Logan is also quick to point out that the exciting parts of the career come with challenges.
Production can mean long days, significant time in airports, unpredictable weather, and dealing with problems when things do not go according to plan.
That is why Logan believes passion for the work matters.
“This isn’t a job that you can just be indifferent about. You have to love it.”
Your Skills Matter, but So Do Your Relationships
Logan has another piece of advice for anyone interested in film production: learn how to work well with people.
He says networking has been one of the most important parts of his career. Much of his work comes through word of mouth and people he has worked with previously.
Film crews can spend long days together, sometimes traveling and working under challenging conditions. Being talented is important, but so is being someone others want to work with again.
As Logan puts it, “You have to bring good work ethic and good vibes.”
His experience is a reminder that building a career is not only about developing technical skills. Reliability, attitude, relationships, and reputation can also create future opportunities.
Start With What Interests You
Logan did not wait until adulthood to begin exploring his interests. He started with his mom’s camcorder, then found opportunities to create videos and take photographs while he was still in high school.
Education helped him develop those interests further, and professional experience helped turn them into a business.
At 28, Logan has built a career that combines creativity, technical skill, entrepreneurship, travel, and relationships.
