From X-Ray to MRI: Ashley’s Career in Medical Imaging

When most people think of skilled trades, they picture construction sites and tool belts. Ashley’s story asks you to think again and to look a little closer at what’s happening inside your local hospital.

At 35, Ashley has spent more than fifteen years building a career in medical imaging, a field she entered with a two-year degree in X-ray technology. What started as a focused, practical certification quickly became a platform for growth. Over the years, she added training in CAT scan and MRI, deepening her expertise and expanding the range of patients she can serve.

She has been in healthcare since 2009.

Ashley works directly with patients, operating the equipment that gives physicians the information they need to make critical decisions. It is precise, meaningful work, and it does not require a four-year degree to get started.

She loves it, and the impact she makes is felt every day.

One of the things Ashley feels strongly about is reframing how people think about trades in healthcare. The truth is, most of the hands-on work in a hospital is done by people in skilled trade roles. CNAs provide direct patient care on the floor. Medical laboratory technicians run the lab work and deliver the results doctors rely on. Pharmacy technicians keep medications moving through the system with just six months of training. EMTs and medical assistants form the backbone of physician assistant programs across the country. These are trades, and they are essential.

For anyone considering a career in medical imaging, her advice is straightforward. Start with the two-year X-ray program. Get your footing. Then, if you want variety or a new challenge, add a modality. Ultrasound, interventional radiology, and mammography each requires only a few additional months of training and opens a new door.

Ashley’s career is proof that in healthcare, the trades do not just support the system. They are the system.
