27 Jul One Step at a Time: Shannon’s Journey to Becoming a Chef
Great careers are often built one opportunity at a time.
For Shannon, her journey into the culinary world didn’t begin in a fine dining kitchen. It started in an elementary school cafeteria, where she worked as an instructional assistant helping prepare and serve lunches to students.
That first experience introduced her to food service and sparked an interest in hospitality. As she gained experience, she continued to grow, eventually moving into the hospitality industry and becoming a Back of House Supervisor and Chef.
Today, after three years in her current role, Shannon says she absolutely loves what she does.
Leading Through Hospitality
As both a supervisor and chef, Shannon helps lead the kitchen while ensuring guests receive high quality meals and excellent service. Success in the culinary industry requires teamwork, organization, attention to detail, and the ability to perform well in a fast paced environment.
For Shannon, the greatest reward is being part of an industry that brings people together through great food and memorable experiences.
Start Learning Early
For anyone interested in becoming a chef, Shannon recommends beginning with hospitality management. Learning how kitchens operate, how teams work together, and how food service businesses are managed provides a strong foundation for a successful career.
She also encourages people to explore hospitality courses offered through community colleges or technical programs. Combining classroom instruction with real world experience helps build the skills needed to grow in the industry.
It’s Never Too Late to Build a New Career
At 53 years old, Shannon’s story is proof that careers don’t always follow a straight path. She began in one role, continued learning, embraced new opportunities, and worked her way into leadership.
Her journey reminds us that every job can become a stepping stone. With a willingness to learn and grow, today’s opportunity can lead to a career you truly love.
