10 Apr Torin Shares His Experience in the Leather Repair Trade
Torin has spent much of his life working with his hands, preserving items that others might throw away. As a skilled leather repair specialist, he focuses on restoring shoes, handbags, and other leather goods with precision and care.
His story began when his father retired from the military and bought a shoe repair business. Torin learned the trade by working alongside experienced leather workers and craftspeople who taught him the tools and techniques of the profession.
Learning Through Experience
Torin’s training came through observation, hands-on practice, and mentorship from those around him. He learned by doing, gaining knowledge from coworkers and others in the trade over time.
I met Torin when I needed leather shoulder straps made for a sandwich board. He and his team crafted a custom set that was both sturdy and well designed. His skill reminded me of another time I needed a good shoe repaired after my puppy chewed it up. A leather worker like Torin made it wearable again.
His workshop is full of small success stories like that. During my visit, he showed me a leather horse toy he had repaired several times over the years. It had seen plenty of use from playful children and was back for a minor fix.
Honest Reflections on the Trade
When asked whether he would recommend leather repair as a trade or business today, Torin was honest.
“It is a lot of work and not very profitable,” he said.
Still, at 64 years old, Torin remains active in the trade. His dedication reflects a commitment to quality and tradition, even in a field that is no longer widely pursued. His work helps preserve craftsmanship and gives customers a way to save and restore items that matter.
