From High School Robotics to Head Electrician: Walter’s Career as an Industrial Electrician

For Walter, becoming an electrician started with curiosity.

He always enjoyed taking things apart to understand how they worked, especially anything involving electricity. In high school, that curiosity led him to classes in robotics, mechatronics, and residential house wiring.

Those classes introduced Walter to possibilities he had never considered before. What began as an interest soon became something he could see himself doing for a career.

From the Classroom to an Apprenticeship

Walter began gaining experience as an apprentice with a small residential electrical company. Working alongside experienced professionals allowed him to take what he had learned in school and apply it to real electrical systems.

He continued developing his skills and eventually became a journeyman residential electrician for a remodeling company, where he focused on the electrical side of the business.

When Walter moved to another city, he found another opportunity with a residential remodeling company and continued working with electrical systems.

Every position added to his knowledge and experience.

Eventually, those skills helped him make the transition from residential electrical work into industrial electrical work.

Keeping a Manufacturing Plant Running

Today, Walter is the head electrician on his shift at a manufacturing company.

His responsibilities have grown significantly from those early days as an apprentice. He now helps keep the equipment and plant operating so the company can continue producing the food people depend on.

Industrial electricians play an important role in manufacturing. When equipment has an electrical problem, production can be affected. Electricians like Walter troubleshoot problems, maintain electrical systems, and help keep complex machinery operating.

Walter loves his role and takes pride in knowing his skills have a positive impact.

At only 26 years old, he has already progressed from an interested high school student to an apprentice, journeyman residential electrician, industrial electrician, and now the head electrician on his shift.

Start Learning as Soon as Possible

Walter encourages anyone interested in electrical work to begin gaining knowledge as soon as possible.

Look for programs in high school, community college, or trade school that provide an opportunity to learn about electrical systems and develop practical skills. Apprenticeships can also provide valuable experience by allowing someone to learn while working alongside professionals in the trade.

Walter also believes attitude matters. His advice is to remain grateful and always put God first.

His journey demonstrates what can happen when curiosity is combined with education, experience, and a willingness to keep learning.

A high school class helped Walter discover an interest. An apprenticeship gave him an opportunity to develop it. Today, that interest has become a skilled career with increasing responsibility and room to continue growing.
