14 Oct From Shop Class to Custom Furniture Builder: William’s Career in Woodworking
Ask William how he feels about his career as a custom furniture builder, and he has one word for you: “Ecstatic!”
And he does not say it casually. His enthusiasm is unmistakable.
At 51, William owns Cottage by the Sea Custom Woodwork in New Jersey, where he creates custom furniture and one of a kind woodworking pieces for his clients.
He is a self taught craftsman whose career began with simple furniture and gradually developed into something much more artistic.
Today, William says woodworking has given him a life he never imagined, and he genuinely looks forward to walking into his shop every day.
From Simple Tables to Custom Creations
William’s interest in woodworking began in shop class.
That early introduction gave him an opportunity to work with his hands, learn about tools, and discover the satisfaction of making something himself.
He started by building tables and standard furniture.
As his experience grew, so did his creativity.
William began challenging himself to create more complex pieces, developing his skills through practice, experimentation, and a willingness to learn.
Over time, woodworking became more than simply building functional furniture. It became an opportunity to express his artistic abilities.
Today, William creates custom pieces that reflect both his craftsmanship and his clients’ ideas.
Building a Business Around His Craft
William eventually turned his woodworking skills into his own business, Cottage by the Sea Custom Woodwork.
Running a custom furniture business allows him to work directly with clients and create pieces they can enjoy for years.
One of the things William appreciates most is the response he receives from people who love his work.
His craftsmanship has also attracted attention beyond his customers. William and his work have been featured on a local television news program and in a local newspaper.
That recognition means a great deal to someone who taught himself much of what he knows.
Through years of developing his craft, William has earned the respect and appreciation of people who value his work.
“Ecstatic” About Going to Work Every Day
Perhaps the most memorable part of William’s story is how he describes his happiness.
When asked whether he enjoys being a custom furniture builder, his response was immediate and enthusiastic.
“Ecstatic!”
In fact, William expressed his excitement so strongly that it brought humor to the conversation. There was absolutely no question about how he felt.
He loves going to his shop every day.
He loves creating.
And he loves seeing the joy his finished pieces bring to his customers.
William says the custom furniture business has provided him with a life he never could have imagined when he first started woodworking.
For him, the reward is not only having his own business. It is being able to spend his days doing something that brings him genuine happiness.
Start with Shop Class
William’s advice to anyone interested in woodworking is simple: take shop classes.
That is where his own journey began.
Learning to use tools, understand materials, and build basic projects can provide a foundation for more advanced woodworking skills.
From there, aspiring woodworkers can continue practicing, learning new techniques, and discovering their own creative interests.
William’s experience shows that a person does not have to begin as an expert. Skills can develop over time, and simple projects can eventually lead to highly specialized craftsmanship.
At 51, William has built a business, developed a reputation for his work, and found a career that gives him tremendous personal satisfaction.
And if there is one word that describes how he feels about the life he has created, it is the same word he enthusiastically repeated during his interview.
Ecstatic!
