From Auto Body Repair to Business Owner in San Diego

When you think about turning a passion for cars into a lifelong career, Hugo’s story is a perfect example of how far dedication, skill, and entrepreneurship can take you. At 45, Hugo isn’t just working a job. He owns a business, inspires others, and still finds joy in making something damaged look brand new.

Starting at the Ground Level

Hugo didn’t begin as a business owner. Like many in the trades, he started at the bottom. His first role? Detailing cars. It’s the entry point for many in the auto body repair trade, where you learn the basics: cleaning, polishing, and prepping vehicles to perfection.

From there, Hugo moved up step by step:

  • Prepping (sanding down surfaces)
  • Bodywork (fixing dents and damaged panels)
  • And finally, painting

These stages take time, commitment, and a drive to learn. But for Hugo, each step was part of a bigger goal. He wanted to master every skill to become what the industry calls a “combo specialist.” That means being trained and talented in all areas of auto body repair, from prep to paint. That’s not just experience. It’s expertise.

“If You Like What You Do, It’s Not a Job”

Hugo’s mindset is simple but powerful: “If you like what you do, it’s not a job.” You can see the pride in his work when he talks about restoring a wrecked car and making it shine like new. It’s about more than fixing. It’s about transformation. And for many in the trades, that’s the most rewarding part.

Whether you’re working on a beat-up bumper or an entire frame, auto body repair offers the satisfaction of immediate, visible results. It’s a trade for people who enjoy working with their hands, solving problems, and seeing the impact of their efforts every single day.

Building His Own Business

After mastering the trade, Hugo didn’t stop there. He leaped into entrepreneurship and launched his own business: Bumper Specialists in San Diego. Running a business comes with its own set of challenges, but Hugo embraced them. He also practiced two of Trade Works USA’s core pillars: money management and personal branding. Both are essential for turning a trade into a thriving business.

Today, Hugo leads a crew and takes pride in every repair his team completes. He’s living proof that a trade career can lead to independence, financial stability, and something even better. A sense of purpose.
