15 May Making the Leap Into a Helping Career
When Dayna first considered stepping into the medical field, she wasn’t looking for a lifelong commitment. She just wanted to “tip her toe” in. That simple decision led to a career where she now helps people every day and finds real satisfaction in her work. Her story is a powerful reminder that testing the waters can lead to meaningful, rewarding opportunities.
Taking the First Step
At age 35, Dayna decided to make a change. She enrolled in a fast-paced, intensive three-month certification program at a private college in the U.S. It was challenging and at times overwhelming, but it gave her the foundation she needed to begin her career as a medical assistant.
Many people feel stuck when thinking about changing careers, especially later in life. But Dayna shows that it’s never too late to take a new path. With the right training and motivation, a world of opportunity can open up.
Finding Purpose in Helping Others
What makes Dayna’s journey so inspiring isn’t just the career shift—it’s the heart behind it. “Helping people is really important to me,” she shared. In her role, she gets to connect with patients, listen to their concerns, and support them through their health challenges.
Dayna’s experience shows that jobs in skilled trades and healthcare aren’t just about technical skills. They’re about building relationships, offering support, and making a difference. Today, she works in Corona, California with Dr. Arti Amin at the Corona Foot and Ankle Group, helping patients in a hands-on, meaningful way.
Advice for Aspiring Medical Assistants
Her biggest tip for anyone considering a career in medical assistance? “Schooling is challenging but worth it. See what area fits your interest.” For Dayna, her interest was sparked when her brother’s girlfriend injured her foot. Observing the podiatrist’s work led her to pursue that specialty.
That personal moment turned into a career she now loves. Whether it’s podiatry, pediatrics, or another specialty, Dayna encourages others to explore what sparks their interest and pursue it with confidence.
Why the Trades Matter
Although medical assisting may fall just outside the traditional definition of the trade, it shares many of the same benefits: hands-on learning, short-term training, and meaningful work without the need for a four-year degree. It’s a stable, fulfilling career path with real impact.
At Trade Works USA, we believe stories like Dayna’s highlight the value of exploring non-traditional careers that align with your passion. Whether you’re just starting out or looking for a fresh start, skilled trades and allied healthcare fields offer a strong and promising future.
