Bernie’s journey into the printing trade started with a simple but powerful approach. He knocked on doors and said, “I will learn.” That willingness to show up and work opened the door to a meaningful career in printing and foil stamping. Today, at 53 years old, Bernie is a manager in the folding carton packaging field, and he is proud of the path that brought him here.
Learning by Doing
Bernie got his start while unemployed, going from company to company looking for an opportunity. One company took a chance on him and brought him in as general help. From there, it was all about on-the-job training. He learned from experienced professionals, stayed open to feedback, and built his skills from the ground up.
Today, he is not only experienced in the technical side of printing but also leads teams and ensures high quality production in a fast moving industry.
Why Printing Is Always Changing
Bernie enjoys what he does and is glad he committed to the trade. One of the things he appreciates most is that no two days are the same.
“Every day is different. It is always changing and challenging,” he says.
Working in folding carton packaging, Bernie understands that a product’s package is often the first impression a customer has of a brand. That first impression matters, which is why customers want it to be perfect. Creating designs that stand out is what makes this work exciting and never boring. Printing is not just ink on paper. It is about capturing attention and delivering excellence.
Bernie’s Advice for the Next Generation in Printing
Bernie’s path to becoming a manager was not about asking for promotions. It was about preparing for them.
“Never ask for a promotion. Prepare yourself for the next position you would like to obtain,” he says.
He also encourages anyone entering the field to find a mentor, someone who is willing to share their knowledge. And most importantly, he says, you must love the work.
“You must like it and enjoy seeing the results of ink on paper. It gives you a real sense of satisfaction.”
