From Apprentice to International Service Technician: Johanna’s Career with Heidelberg

At just 22 years old, Johanna is already building an impressive career in one of Germany’s most respected manufacturing companies. Her journey shows how apprenticeships in the trades can lead to global opportunities and meaningful work.

Right after high school, Johanna began a three-year apprenticeship with Heidelberg, one of Germany’s largest manufacturers of printing equipment. Instead of choosing a traditional university path, she chose a hands-on technical training program. Over those three years, she learned the inner workings of complex printing presses and developed the skills required to service and maintain them.

She caught on quickly.

Today, Johanna has been working for Heidelberg in an official capacity as a Service Technician for three years. Her role takes her on service calls where she diagnoses issues, repairs equipment, and ensures printing presses operate at peak performance. If she encounters a challenge she has not seen before, she has a team she can call upon for support. Collaboration is part of the culture, and problems are solved together.

One of the highlights of her career so far was being sent from Germany to Orlando, Florida, for the Printing United trade show. Heidelberg entrusted Johanna with installing a major piece of equipment for the event and later handling its removal. Representing a global manufacturer on an international stage is a significant responsibility, especially at her age.

Johanna says she is very happy with her decision to pursue this trade. She enjoys the technical challenges, the teamwork, and the opportunity to travel for her work.

Her advice to anyone considering becoming a Service Technician for an equipment company is thoughtful and realistic. Training takes time. Be patient. Problems will appear, but by working together, they can be solved.

Johanna’s story is a powerful example of how apprenticeships and technical training can quickly open doors. In just a few years, she moved from a high school graduate to a trusted international Service Technician for a world-leading equipment manufacturer.
