Turning a Love for Photography into a Career

Turning a Love for Photography into a Career

Jim’s love for photography began when he was just eight years old, after his mom gave him a Brownie camera. That simple gift sparked something lasting. For years, that camera became a part of who he was. Life took him in other directions, but photography stayed in his heart. Eventually, it became his profession.

A Chance Opportunity That Changed Everything

Years later, Jim was at a hot air balloon event when he picked up photography again. He started taking photos just for fun, but soon people noticed and even paid him for his work. At the time, Jim was running a large moving and storage company. He had a few of his balloon photos hanging on the office wall when a client noticed them during a visit.

She asked about the pictures, then mentioned she had a wedding coming up. A few photographers had backed out, and she needed someone quickly. She asked Jim if he did wedding photography. At first, he said no. But after hearing her story, he decided to help.

He and a friend photographed the wedding and had a blast. They enjoyed it so much that Jim thought, “I can do this.” And from that moment on, he never looked back.

Turning Passion into a Full Time Career

About a year after that first wedding shoot, Jim decided it was time to take the leap. He became a full-time photographer. Weddings remain a major part of his business, but they are not his only focus. He has built a career capturing the moments that matter—portraits, special events, and memories that last a lifetime.

Although he took a photography class in high school and a bit more in college, photography was never his major. Instead, his skills developed through hands on experience, a love for the craft, and a commitment to making his clients happy.

Jim’s Advice for Aspiring Photographers

Jim is now 77 years old and has no plans to slow down.

“I don’t want to stop because of the fun and enjoyment I get from taking photos that make a difference in people’s memories,” he says.

His advice to new photographers is simple: do not go full time too soon. With the availability of digital cameras, many people assume they are ready to be professionals, but experience and trust take time to build.

“Find a niche and let that business grow,” he adds. Whether it is weddings, portraits, or another specialty, focusing on one area helps you stand out and build a strong reputation.
